Etymology

From Old Portuguese sẽestro, from Latin sinister, sinistrum (left), through a Vulgar Latin root *sinexter, sinextrum, from contamination with dexter (right), whence Portuguese destro. Cognate with Spanish siniestro, Old French senestre, old Italian sinestro. Compare also the borrowed doublet sinistro.
