Etymology

From Latin sinister, sinistrum, through a Vulgar Latin form *sinexter, sinextrum, from contamination with dexter (whence Italian destro)[1]. Compare also Portuguese sestro, Spanish siniestro, Old French senestre, Old Catalan sinestre.
