Etymology

From northern Middle High German roten, roden and Middle Low German rōden, from Proto-Germanic *rudōną. Cognate with Dutch rooien. The variant rotten (still in ausrotten) shows a more southern phonetical development. However, most Upper German dialects used the verb reuten, from Old High German riutan, which is related but not identical with the former. Also akin to English rid, Danish rydde.
