From minaccia (threat) or from a Vulgar Latin *mināciāre, present active infinitive of *mināciō (threaten), from *minācia (threat), from Latin mināx, mināciae (threatening), from minor (threaten). Compare Catalan amenaçar, French menacer, Occitan amenaçar, Portuguese ameaçar, Romanian ameninţa, Friulian menaçâ, Sicilian amminazzari, Spanish amenazar.
