Etymology 1

From Middle Dutch hêten, from Old Dutch hētan, originally from the passive voice of Proto-Germanic *haitaną.

heten

  1. (copulative) To be named; to have as name; to be called.
    Deze kat heet Felix.
    This cat is called Felix.
  2. (copulative) to be (a translation or synonym of); to be called.

    What is that in French?
  3. (transitive, dated) To name, to call (to provide with a name, to define a name as).
    • 1900, Frederik van Eeden, Van de koele meren des Doods, W. Versluys (publ., 1st ed.), page 7.

    Synonym: noemen
  4. (copulative, dated) to be claimed; to be asserted.
Het heet dat hij ziek is.
It's being claimed that he is sick.
  5. (copulative, dated) to mean; to have as meaning
Usage notes
  • In a lot of dialects and colloquially the verb noemen (call, give a name) is used instead of heten. This is generally considered incorrect[1] and is not usually tolerated in written Dutch.
