From Proto-Slavic *gonìti[1], from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gon-ei/i-[1], from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen-[1]. Cognate with Lithuanian ganýti (to graze)[1][2], Ancient Greek θείνω (theínō, to slay)[1][3] and Sanskrit हन्ति (hanti, to slay)[1][3].
