French

Etymology

en- + lever

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ɑ̃l.ve/
  • (file)

Verb

enlever

  1. (transitive) to remove, take off, take away, clear
  2. (transitive) to take off, remove (clothes)
Elle enleva ses lunettes et j'aperçus sa beauté.
She took off her glasses and I glimpsed her beauty.
  3. (transitive) to kidnap, abduct
  4. (transitive) to win, capture, carry off
  5. (reflexive) to come out, wash off

Conjugation

This verb is conjugated mostly like the regular -er verbs (parler and chanter and so on), but the -e- /ə/ of the second-to-last syllable becomes -è- /ɛ/ when the next vowel is a silent or schwa -e-. For example, in the third-person singular present indicative, we have il enlève rather than *il enleve. Other verbs conjugated this way include lever and mener. Related but distinct conjugations include those of appeler and préférer.
