Eer + -ig. First element from Old High German ēr (“ore; brass”), from Proto-Germanic *aiz (“copper, bronze; ore”), from Proto-Indo-European *áyos (“a metal, copper, bronze”). Compare Italian rameico, Spanish alámbrico.
