căpățână

Romanian

Alternative forms

  • căpățînă (old orthography)

Etymology

Probably from Vulgar Latin *capitina, ultimately from Latin caput (head), possibly formed through analogy with morticina. Compare Aromanian cãpitsãnã. Other possibilities may include an internal derivation from cap, or from a căpăț (perhaps from Latin capitium) with the suffix -ână. Compare Spanish cabeza, Portuguese cabeça.

Noun

căpățână f (plural căpățăni)

  1. head of a dead animal cut for consumption
  2. human skull (removed from the head)
