From Hindi बिरयानी (biryānī)/Urdu بریانی‎ (biryānī), from Persian بریانی‎ (biryānī), compound of بریان‎ (biryān, “roast”) (from برشتن‎ (birištan, “to roast”)) and the suffix ـی‎ (-ī).[1]
