• The feminine noun arpa is like other feminine nouns starting with a stressed a sound in that it takes the definite article el (normally reserved for masculine nouns) in the singular when there is no intervening adjective:

From Proto-Turkic *arpa (“barley”). Probably borrowed into Proto-Mongolic *arbaï and Manchu ᠠᡵᡶᠠ (arfa), although some Altaicists consider them related through common inheritance. Another less secure comparison is Japanese 粟 (awa, “foxtail millet”).

The Turkic form is sometimes compared with Proto-Iranian *arpasyaH (“barley”) which is not found outside East Iranian. While Blažek (2012) prefers an Indo-European (Iranian) origin of the Altaic words for ‘barley’, Hyllestedt argues that several facts do point to a borrowing in the reverse direction. One possible Indo-European cognate for the Iranian word is Ancient Greek ἄλφιτον (álphiton, “barley-groats”), but the comparison is unsecure.
