Pronunciation

  • (file)

Noun

afikso (accusative singular afikson, plural afiksoj, accusative plural afiksojn)

  1. "affix": a morpheme whose position within a word is not predictable from Esperanto word-compounding rules. (Compare afiksoido.)
Among the official morphemes, the true antaŭafiksoj are bo-, eks-, ge-, mal-, pra-. These change the nature of the word, and therefore would occur at the end if they were part of a compound.
Among the official morphemes, the true postafiksoj are -aĉ-, -ĉjo, -njo. These do not change the nature of the word, and therefore would occur at the beginning if they were part of a compound.
-um- is sometimes included in this list, as it's irregular; however, it generally dominates the meaning of the word, and therefore would be expected to occur at the end
