Tàu (艚)

     And then there are some Chinamen and Vietnammen who've said that there were these Sanmiao in ancient China. The Han from the northwest displaced them, took over the Yellow River, founded the Chinese state, then gradually expanded southward, which resulted in the Sanmiao having to hide in the woods or to go to what that is now Vietnam.

This term and người Tàu in particular may be considered derogatory in contemporary usage. However, historically, it was not considered derogatory. tàu, lowercased, is used in a variety of common nouns that are not considered derogatory either.
