Etymologically the same word as Stadt (“city”) and a mere orthographic variant of the latter. The same word is also Stätte (“place”). See these two for more.

Statt f (genitive Statt, no plural)

1. (literary) place

• The bare word is now restricted chiefly to the expression an meiner Statt (“in my place, instead of me”), an deiner Statt (“in your place, instead of you”), and so on.
• In compounds, Statt tends to be replaced with Stätte. An exception is Werkstatt, which, however, takes the plural Werkstätten.
• In older usage, -stätte could be a plural of -statt (as well as an alternative singular). See citations page.
