From Proto-Balto-Slavic *twor(ʔ)-o, from Proto-Indo-European *tworH-o-, equivalent to *tvoriti +‎ *-ъ. Cognate with Lithuanian ãptvaras, Ancient Greek σορός (sorós, “urn”).
