From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dírāˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *der-. Cognate with Lithuanian dìrti (“to tear, to peel”), 1sg. dìriu, dir̃ti (“to tear, to peel”), 1sg. derù, Latvian dìrât (“to flay”), Ancient Greek δέρω (dérō, “to flay”), Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (distairan, “to tear apart”), English tear.
