By one reconstruction, from earlier *þiuhstrijaz, from Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- (to swell). Alternatively, related to *þimistraz with m > in the cluster, from Proto-Indo-European *temH-(e)s-ros, s-stem formed to the root *temH-.[1]
