From Proto-Germanic *þiustrijaz (dark, without light), probably from a pre-Indo-European substrate language. Cognate with Old English þīestre (dark, gloomy), Old Frisian thiustere, Middle Dutch duuster, Icelandic þjóstur (anger, bad temper) .
