Levente
See also: levente
Hungarian
Etymology
Generally considered as a derivative of the Hungarian verb lesz (“to be”) hence its original meaning (see below); another theory is it might be derived from Slavic lovac (“hunter”). Its origin is unrelated to the Hungarian noun levente (“knight”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈlɛvɛntɛ]
Audio (file) - Hyphenation: Le‧ven‧te
Usage notes
The only officially listed diminutive of Levente is Levi - unrelated to the Jewish first name Levi (also written as Levy), but pronounced similarly. Slang nicknames like Lecsó or Leves are also popular among the youth.
