Levente

Hungarian

Etymology

Generally considered as a derivative of the Hungarian verb lesz (to be) hence its original meaning (see below); another theory is it might be derived from Slavic lovac (“hunter”). Its origin is unrelated to the Hungarian noun levente (knight).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈlɛvɛntɛ]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Le‧ven‧te

Proper noun

Levente

  1. A male given name, meaning existing.

Usage notes

The only officially listed diminutive of Levente is Levi - unrelated to the Jewish first name Levi (also written as Levy), but pronounced similarly. Slang nicknames like Lecsó or Leves are also popular among the youth.
