Etymology

From Hindi हैदराबाद (haidrābād) / Urdu حیدرآباد, from हैदर (haidar) / حیدر (haidar, lion) + -आबाद (-ābād) / آباد (-ābād, placename suffix). Named in honour of the Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib, nicknamed "Haidar" for his lion-like valour in battles.[1]
