From the Arabic phrase اَلْظَهْرُ اَلْدُبِّ اَلْأَكْبَر (al-ẓahru l-dubbi l-ʾakbar, “the back of the great bear [i.e. Ursa Major]”), from ظَهْر‎ (ẓahr, “back”) + دُبّ‎ (dubb, “bear”) + أَكْبَر‎ (ʾakbar, “great”).
