From Persian آذربایجان (âzarbâyjân), from Arabic أَذَرْبَيْجَان (ʾaḏarbayjān), from Persian آذربایگان (âzarbâyegân), آذربادگان (âzarbâdgân), form Middle Persian ʾtwrpʾtkʾn, ʾtwrpʾtkn (Ādurbādagān), from the name of Atropates, the Persian nobleman who founded the independent kingdom of Atropatene. For the suffix see -ական (-akan). Compare Old Armenian Ատրպատական (Atrpatakan), Ատրապատական (Atrapatakan), Ատրպայական (Atrpayakan), Armenian Ադրբեջան (Adrbeǰan), Byzantine Greek Ἀδαρβιγάνων (Adarbigánōn), Classical Syriac ܐܕܘܪܒܝܓܐܢ (ʾĀḏōrbêḡān).
