Azerbaidžāna

Latvian

Azerbaidžāna (Eirāzijā)
Azerbaidžānas karogs

Etymology

Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Azerbaijani Azərbaycan, itslef apparently from Persian آذر (âzar, fire) and پایگان (pāyegān, protector, guardian), i.e. “guardian of fire,” apparently a reference to Zoroastrian practices. In Latvian, the word was made into a feminine 4th-declension noun, following the usual pattern for country names.
