-овик

Russian

Alternative forms

  • -евик (-evik) (after a palatalized or formerly palatalized consonant)

Etymology

Originally from -ик (-ik) added to adjectives ending in -овый (-ovyj) or -ово́й (-ovój); later extracted out as its own suffix.

Pronunciation

  • -овик: IPA(key): [əvʲɪk]
  • -ови́к: IPA(key): [ɐˈvʲik]

Suffix

-овик or -ови́к (-ovik or -ovík) m inan or m anim

  1. suffix appended to nouns to form related nouns of various sorts, both animate and inanimate, generally referring to more specific objects than the base lemma

Usage notes

  • For many, perhaps most, nouns ending in -овик (-ovik), the base noun has a corresponding relational adjective in -овый (-ovyj) or

-ово́й (-ovój), in which case an analysis of the noun as formed from the relational adjective + -ик (-ik) is still possible, and in same cases preferred.

  • As with -ик (-ik), the suffix may be stressed, in which case it is in accent pattern b (always ending-stressed).
  • The suffix becomes -евик (-evik) after a palatalized consonant (including unpaired ч щ /j/) or a formerly palatalized consonant (ш ж ц).
