Etymology

From Old Japanese 嘆く (nage2ku, sigh; to lament; supplicate) (cf. phonetic man'yōgana form 奈氣久 (MCH kʰɨiH kɨuX)), verbalized from 嘆き (nage2ki1, sighing; lament; supplication), to be derived as a compound of (naga, long) and (iki1, breath).[1]
