From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (enclosure)[1]. Cognate with Thai เวียง (wiiang), Northern Thai ᩅ᩠ᨿᨦ (wiang). Khmer វៀង (viəng, city, metropolis, capital) is a back-loan from Tai.
