From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀺𑀁𑀕 (siṃga), from Sanskrit शृङ्ग (śṛṅga), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱer- (“horn”). Cognate with Marathi शिंग (śiṅg), Sylheti ꠢꠤꠋ (hing), Assamese শিং (xiṅ).
