De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door Stephen Blair Hedges, Angela B. Marion, Kelly M. Lipp, Julie Marin & Nicolas Vidal in 2014. Er zijn dertien soorten die voorkomen in delen van zuidoostelijk Afrika, inclusief enkele eilanden en eilandgroepen zoals Madagaskar.
