Biografie

Smith was voorheen sideman bij Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1965–1967), bij wie hij meewerkte aan het album Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith, bij Art Blakey (1966), Pharoah Sanders (Karma, 1969), Gato Barbieri (1971) en Miles Davis (1973), combineerde hij vanaf 1974 in zijn eigen band Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes jazz met populaire zwarte muziekstijlen zoals onder meer funk. Lonnie Liston Smith behoort tot de vertegenwoordigers van de fusion. Na zijn commerciële succes met het album Expansions bleef hij tot vandaag deze muziekstijl vergaand trouw.
