Levensloop

John Philips vader was trombonist in de United States Marine Band "The President's Own" in Washington D.C..

In 1872 publiceerde hij zijn eerste compositie, Moonlight on the Potomac Waltzes.

In 1882 ging zijn eerste operette in première The Smugglers. In 1896 componeerde hij dé Amerikaanse mars The Stars and Stripes Forever.
