Verspreiding en leefgebied

Deze soort komt voor in centraal en het westelijke deel van Centraal-Afrika en telt 4 ondersoorten:

Dendropicos elliotii johnstoni: oostelijk Nigeria, zuidwestelijk Kameroen en Bioko (Golf van Guinee).
Dendropicos elliotii elliotii: van zuidelijk Kameroen en Gabon tot Oeganda.
Dendropicos elliotii kupeensis: Mount Kupe (het westelijke deel van Centraal-Kameroen).
Dendropicos elliotii gabela: noordwestelijk Angola.
