De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door Wilhelm Peters in 1864. Er zijn vijf soorten inclusief de pas in 2013 voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven soort Asthenodipsas lasgalenensis. Alle soorten komen voor in delen van Azië.
