Anafoor (stijlfiguur)

Een anafoor is een stijlfiguur, die bestaat uit het herhalen van steeds weer een of meerdere woorden aan het begin van elkaar opvolgende zinnen of zinsdelen. Deze stijlfiguur is veelgebruikt in de retoriek.

Voorbeelden

  • 'k Kwam op 'n brugje
    'k Kwam op 'n wegje
'k Kwam 'n roodbont hondje tegen
  • Niemand die het weet,
    niemand die wat doet
niemand die het wat kan schelen ...

Ook in het Latijn zijn anaforen bekend. Bijvoorbeeld de laatste strofe van Carmen 51 van Catullus;

  • Otium, Catulle, tibi molestum est:
    otio exsultas nimiumque gestis:
otium et reges prius et beatas
    perdidit urbes.

Enkele bekende voorbeelden in het Engels zijn:

We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender.
Winston Churchill

Uit de beroemde toespraak I Have a Dream:

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment,
I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state, sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
