"Woke Up Like This" (stylized as "wokeuplikethis*") is a song by American rapper Playboi Carti featuring vocals from American rapper Lil Uzi Vert and production from Pi'erre Bourne. It was released on April 7, 2017, as the second single from Carti's eponymous debut commercial mixtape Playboi Carti (2017).

The song samples the 2004 single "White Tee" by fellow Atlanta rap group Dem Franchize Boyz.[2]

The song premiered via SoundCloud on March 10, 2017,[3] and was released on the iTunes for digital download as a single on April 7, 2017.[4]

Composition and lyrics

Woke Up Like This is a trap song. His verses have been described as "spilling out unfinished ideas, but there’s a charm to the way he dawdles through verses, as if rap is merely an afterthought."[5]

The song's audio video was released on April 6, 2017, accumulating 2 million views as of May 2020.

The song's official music video was released on August 7, 2017, premiering exclusively on Tidal, and has 39 million views as of May 2020.[6] The video was directed by James “JMP” Pereira, who previously directed Look At Me and Moonlight for XXXTentacion.[7]

Synopsis

The video takes place in a prison. The opening lines show a shirtless Carti getting a haircut by a woman in a red dress while lip syncing the lyrics on a rotary dial telephone. The video also switches between shots of an exercise yard and a hallway with other prisoners imitating them.[8] At 1:31, the video switches to a shot of Carti in clothes in a black background, with Uzi making an appearance. The video then switches back to the prison setting.
