"What About Us" is a song by American singer Pink. It was written by Pink, Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid, with production handled by Mac. The song was released through RCA Records in 2017, as the lead single from Pink's seventh studio album, Beautiful Trauma (2017), along with its pre-order.

It topped charts in Australia, South Africa, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland, and has reached the top 10 in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lebanon, New Zealand, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as the top 20 in Norway, Sweden, and the United States. The song was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Promotion and release

Pink hinted at an upcoming release in a tweet on July 16, 2017. When a fan asked when they could expect new music, Pink wrote: "Well I'm shooting a video next week".[1] On July 21, 2017, Pink shared a video from the filming set, captioned: "Video #new #fyeah #itsallhappening".[2] The day after, she shared an animated version of the single artwork on social media, revealing the single's title and release date.[3][4][5]

Composition

"What About Us" is an emotional club ballad and dance floor anthem with pounding drums and an array of synthesizers.[6] The song has been described as a protest song.[7] It is written in the key of A♭ major with a tempo of 114 beats per minute in common time. The song follows a chord progression of Fm–D♭–A♭, and Pink's vocals span one and a half octaves, from A♭3 to E♭5.[8]

Critical reception

Althea Legaspi from Rolling Stone states: "'What About Us' builds from a sparse ballad into an emotional dance floor anthem packed with pounding drums and a gorgeous array of synths".[9] Patrick Crowley from Billboard wrote: "Pink throws out the rules in favor of authenticity once again".[10]

Music video

The official music video for the song was released on August 16, 2017.[11][12] It was directed by Georgia Hudson and choreographed by the Goldenboyz.[13]

Live performances

On August 11 and 12, 2017, Pink performed "What About Us" live for the first time during two concerts at the Berlin Waldbühne.[14] Pink's first televised performance of "What About Us" was at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards on August 27.[15] She performed the song on Ellen on September 6,[16] and on Saturday Night Live on October 14. She has also performed the track on various dates throughout her festival tour in 2017.[17] Pink performed the song and "Beautiful Trauma" on the fourteenth series of The X Factor UK on December 3, 2017.
