Turismo Carretera
Turismo Carretera (Road racing, lit., Road Touring) is a touring car racing series in Argentina. Considered as the most important racing series in its country, was created in 1937 under the name of Campeonato Argentino de Velocidad (Argentine Speed Championship) by the Automóvil Club Argentino. Is the oldest car racing series in the world still active to the date
Its name came from the conjunction of the type of cars utilized on the series (touring cars) and the primitive scenery were the races take place (Route Road and Lane).
In the beginning the competition were done in road course in general on land courses but after high number of accidents it started moving to the closed tracks in the 1990. Today it is only happening on racing courses
Along the history this category used different car types. On the beginning in the 1930 using Touring Cars going by Sport Prototypes on the 60’s-70’s concluding on the 70’s onward compact cars.
At the time the technological diversity would allow the use of different engines from tame inline 4 to the more powerful v8. This diversity on makes models and engines would decrease with the change of time and assembly of new regulations in to the middle 70’s from there on there were 4 models homologated by the organization being them Chevrolet Chevy (Chevy Nova), Dodge GTX, Ford Falcon e IKA Torino, all of them equipped by inline 6 engines with a limit of 183 cubic inches (3000 Cubic Centimeters)
Nowadays since the implementation of the sidepod covering the roll cage (12th race of the 2007 season) the vehicles used are only a representation of the mentioned models and since 2015 the cars are using inline 6 engines developed by Oreste Berta, 24 Valve DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) with a limit of 189 Cubic Inches (3100 Cubic Centimeters) Capable of delivering 500 HP between 8500 – 9000 rpm.
The drivers with more championships are Juan Gálvez with 9, Guillermo Ortelli with 7, Juan María Traverso with 6, Óscar Alfredo Gálvez with 5, Dante Emiliozzi, Héctor Luis Gradassi and Agustín Canapino with 4.
