Targus is a privately owned multinational mobile computing accessories company that designs, manufactures, and sells laptop and tablet cases, computer accessories such as mice, keyboards, and privacy screens, as well as universal docking stations. Targus released the world’s first laptop case in 1983 and specializes in products relevant for mobile and flex workers.

Overview

Targus was founded by 1983 Neil Bruce-Copp in Barnes, London.[2] after he invented the world’s first personal computer carrying case and secured orders from computer giants IBM and ICL to found Targus Group. Sales grew and, by 1985, Targus had taken on new clients including Canon and Apple. In 1986, Targus launched its first laptop case, the T3100L, with a 250-unit order from Toshiba.

Over the next several years, Targus grew and expand with the technology boom of the 80’s and early 90’s. In 1995, Targus became known as Targus Group International and had offices in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Taipei, Australia, and several more throughout Europe.

Targus opened its new headquarters in Anaheim, California in 2000. In 2004, Targus launched its first docking station, joined the Bluetooth marketplace, and developed the SafePort Air Protection System.[3]

Early in 2005, Targus joined the mobile device market with a range of iPod accessories. Since 2015 Targus has been a Samsung and Google Partner.[4]

Company History

1983–1995: Founding and incorporation

Targus was founded by Neil Bruce-Copp in Barnes, London in 1983.

By 1986, Targus launched its first laptop case, the T3100L, with a 250-unit order from Toshiba. A year later, Targus moves its headquarters to London House in Richmond and opens offices in the United States and Canada. In 1988, Targus Australia was opened, followed by an office in South Africa in 1989 with Targus US opening retail stores for Business-to-Consumer sales that same year.

From 1990-1991, Targus opens offices in France, Germany, Holland, Taipei and Hong Kong, and begins outsourcing production to China, at that time an untapped source of high-quality manufacturing and suppliers.

In 1995, Targus Group becomes known as Targus Group International, Inc.

1998-2019 Expansion and New Product Launch

Targus acquired PORT, in 1998, enabling the company to expand their product line and introduce innovative new technology in the SafePort Sling protection system and the DEFCON security line.

In 1999, Targus LATAM office is opened, and Targus re-brands itself to reflect new innovative and stylish designs. During that next year, Targus opens its Anaheim Headquarters.

During 2004, Targus launches its first docking station, sells its first Bluetooth mouse, and develops the SafePort® Air Protection System.

Targus enters into the mobile device accessory market, in 2005, with a range of accessories designed for the iPod, introduces a new brand and logo, and launches the Dome Protection System. Two years later, Targus launches privacy screens, and the Global Sourcing Group is introduced in China.

In 2008, Targus launches EcoSmart® technology, incorporating materials from recycled bottles into an environmentally friendly line of bags.

The company also releases new contemporary branding and a new company tagline: “Designed for Life. Yours.” in 2009. A year later, Targus enters the tablet and E-reader market following the unprecedented success of the iPad.

In 2011, Targus introduces the VersaVu® tablet case with 360º rotating design to high acclaim.[5]

2013 sees Targus, acquiring leather smartphone and tablet case company, SENA cases, and secures a patent for its checkpoint-friendly design on cases.

The company then launches the VersaLink™ Universal Travel Dock in 2015, adding to the tablet case offerings with a patented Multi-Gen tray solution.

By 2016, Targus announces it works with 90% of Fortune 1000 companies and is the case manufacturer for eight of the world’s top ten laptop computer OEMs.

From 2018 - 2020, Targus launches the premium branded “Newport Collection” and the first IoT-enabled docking station on the market, MiraLogic™, as well as the first Qi-enabled wireless charging backpack at Consumer Electronics Show .[6]

In 2012, Targus becomes a Samsung Mobile Accessories partner and a Google Partner in 2013.

1989 - Targus claims the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in England.[7]

2003 - Targus celebrates two decades of success and becomes a “Designed for Surface” Partner with Microsoft.

2001- The CN01 laptop case is named the best-selling laptop case in the world.

2008- The company also celebrates 25 years of mobile solutions and earns accolades as the #1 Best-Selling Laptop Accessories and Cases from the NPD Group.

2009 - Targus earns #1 Best-Selling Notebook Power Adapter and #1 Maker of Presentation Devices honors from NPD Group.

2017 - Targus wins a CES Innovation Award for the Mobile ViP Backpack, and along with DisplayLink®, announces the world’s first dual 4K docking station.[8]

2018 – Targus wins a Green Good Design Award for the 15.6” Balance™ EcoSmart® Backpack and has the #1 selling tablet case in the US.[9]

2020 – Targus secures additional accolades at CES 2020, earning CES Innovation Awards for its groundbreaking docking station DOCK570, the world’s first quad 4K docking station, and its MiraLogic™ Workspace Intelligence System.[10]

  • DOCK520: A CES 2019 Innovations Awards Honoree[11], the USB-C™ Universal Quad Video HD Docking Station (DOCK520USZ) allows a laptop to connect to up to four monitors via (4) HDMI video out ports.
