The SFI was formed by the merger of the National Swimming Association (NSA) and the Indian Swimming Federation (ISF) in 1948. Prior to the merger, the NSA and ISF had been engaged in disputes. While the Calcutta-based NSA received affiliation from FINA in 1932-33, the ISF had the support of the Indian Olympic Association. The Union Government intervened to resolve the dispute by merging the two entities to form the SFI.[8][9]

In July 2017, FINA presented a certificate to SFI CEO Virendra Nanavati during the 17th FINA World Championship in honour of his services to the discipline.[10]

In May 2019, a new set of office-bearers took charge at the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) AGM held, with R.N. Jayaprakash of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat's D. Chokshi Monal being unanimously elected as President and Secretary respectively. This is the first time, an administrator from Tamil Nadu has been chosen for the top post in SFI. [11]

Speaking to the media, Jayaprakash, who took over from Digambat Kamat, said while it is a “great honour to be elected President”, his priority will be to increase the number of participants at the grassroots level.
