Shobha Karandlaje

Shobha Monappa[2] Karandlaje (born 23 October 1966)[3] is an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Karnataka, India and current Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Udupi Chikmagalur. She was a cabinet minister in the Government of Karnataka.[3] She is a close confidant to Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Hailing from Puttur in Coastal Karnataka, Shobha became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at a very early age,[4] one of the many women full-time workers of the Sangh parivar. When she decided to join politics, the RSS gave her the initial thrust.

She served the Bharatiya Janata Party organisation in various capacities before being elected as an MLC in 2004. She was elected as MLA from Yeswanthpur, Bangalore in May 2008 and was appointed as the minister for rural development and Panchayat Raj in the B S Yeddyurappa govt.

She was lauded for her performance as the RDPR minister[5] and came to be known as a good administrator.[6] She resigned in 2009 due to a political crisis but was re-instated in 2010 and was entrusted with the energy portfolio.. She had resigned from BJP and Joined KJP formed by Ex Chief Minister of Karnataka Mr.BS Yeddyurappa in the year 2013.[7] And was appointed as KJP Working President.[8][9] She was the power minister in the Jagadish Shettar ministry[10] and also had the additional charge of the food and civil supplies department.

She contested the 2014 Indian general election from Udupi Chikmagalur constituency and won by a margin of 1.81 lakh votes. In 2019 General elections she won consistently for second time gaining 7,18,916 adding +6.26 percentage of votes contesting from Udupi Chikmagalur (Lok Sabha constituency).[11]

Controversy
  • FIR Was registered for "provocative" tweets she posted in the social media over an alleged attack on a minor girl in Karnataka's Honnavar. under sections 153 and 503 of the Indian Penal Code.[12][13]
  • A case was registered by Kerala Police based on Article 153(a), IPC 120, for misled and had spreading of incorrect information.[14][15]
  • A Case was registered by Karnataka Police for Tweets On Rape Of Dalit Girl on the charges of provoking people to cause riots, disturbing communal harmony and spreading rumours.[16]
  • As the outbreak of COVID -19 many peoples were visiting the Hospitals in Mangalore Karnataka for treatment from Nearby state of Kerala. She tweeted asking for the background check for the people who were traveling to Karnataka. A Case was booked by Kuttippuram police for her tweet under IPC Sec 153A for promoting Religious enmity.[17][18]
