The series "brings together the stories and characters of both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, two overlapping series that take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse. In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, the Shadow Fold, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her."[2] Meanwhile a prodigal gang leader on the other side of the world embarks on a dangerous heist.[3] Season 1 will serve as an adaptation of the novel Shadow and Bone and act as a prequel to the events of the novel Six of Crows.

In January 2019, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order for an eight-episode first season with Eric Heisserer as showrunner, creator, head writer, and executive producer. Also set to executive produce are Leigh Bardugo herself as well as Pouya Shahbazian, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, and Josh Barry.[2] David J. Peterson is behind the Grishaverse's fictional languages; he previously helped Bardugo with the languages in books as well.[4]
