Princess Barbara of Prussia

On 5 July 1954 in Glücksburg Barbara wed civilly Duke Christian Louis of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, second son of Frederick Francis IV, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.[1] They married in a religious ceremony on 11 July 1954.[2] Duke Christian had been held as a prisoner-of-war for eight years before being finally released by the Russians in 1953. Despite the fact that Barbara was thirty-four and the groom was forty-two, it was the first marriage for both of them.[2] The 11 July ceremony was held at Glücksburg Castle, and was attended by 130 representatives of Germany's royal and noble families. Among them was Louis Ferdinand, Prince of Prussia, the head of the House of Hohenzollern.[2]

They had two daughters:[1]

• Duchess Donata of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (b. 11 March 1956) married on 19 September 1987 Alexander von Solodkoff and had issue:
  • Thyra von Solodkoff (b. 12 October 1989)
  • Alix von Solodkoff (b. 17 March 1992)
  • Niklos-Alexis von Solodkoff (b. 8 December 1994)
• Duchess Edwina of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (b. 25 September 1960) married on 14 October 1995 Konrad von Posern and had issue:
  • Ludwig von Posern (b. 27 February 1996)
  • Paul Friedrich von Posern (b. 14 June 1997)
  • Ferdinand von Posern (b. 19 June 1999)

Her daughters are the only remaining senior members of the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. After the death of her brother-in-law in 2001, the male line of the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin became extinct.
