Political families of India

This is a partial listing of prominent political families of India. However Royal families (who inherit their position automatically) are not included, unless certain later descendants have played political roles in a republican structure.

Nehru–Gandhi family

The Nehru family (often called Nehru–Gandhi family) was established by Motilal Nehru in the early 1900s when India was still part of the British empire. It was further established by his son, Jawaharlal Nehru, who emerged as a prominent figure in India's nationalist movement. After Nehru's death, his daughter, Indira Gandhi, became his political heir, hence, the Gandhi surname, which came from her husband Feroze Gandhi's name. The family, therefore, is not related to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty has dominated the Indian polity, governing the Congress Party since the Indian independence in 1947.[1] Recent developments, however, indicate some setbacks such as the crushing defeat of the Congress Party in the 2014 elections and a series of top-level defections such as those in states like Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal, and Jammu and Kashmir.[2] The dynasty is strongly embedded in the Indian polity that the name continues to have an instinctive hold on loyalties of so many voters.[3]
