Perdana University

Perdana University, also known as PU, is an emerging Malaysian private university located in Serdang, Malaysia. Perdana University was officially incorporated in 2011. In 2017, Perdana University was awarded Tier 4: Very Good in the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education 2017 (SETARA) from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE).[1]

The University took in its very first students in 2011 with the opening of the PU-RCSI School of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine. At present, the University consists of 6 Schools and 2 Centres.[2] The School of Business is the latest school formed recently.

The main campus of PU is located in MAEPS, Serdang, Selangor.

Ownership

Perdana University is a wholly owned subsidiary of Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (AMC).

History

The opening of Perdana University and the medical programme was officiated by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Najib Razak while the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was appointed as its Founding Chancellor.[2] Dato' Pahlawan Dr. R. Mohana Dass served as the founding Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the Perdana University.[3]

Schools and programmes

The university has six schools and two research centres — all of which are in the main campus building in Serdang. All study programmes are offered at this campus with clinical training conducted at partner hospitals and other healthcare organizations.

PU-RCSI School of Medicine

The Perdana University-Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland School of Medicine (PU-RCSI) is one of the founding schools of the University. The first batch of students was enrolled in 2011 and graduated in 2016. The current dean is Professor Dr. Michael Larvin, Consultant Surgeon and the former Head Of Graduate Entry Medical School at University of Limerick.[4] PU-RCSI graduates are conferred with the primary medical degrees (MB BCh BAO) of the National University of Ireland and the historical Licentiates (LRCP & SI) from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.[5][6] The school offers the following programme:

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor in the Art of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO)[7]

Graduate School of Medicine

Established since the founding of the university, the Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (PUGScM) is the first and only medical school in Malaysia to offer the four-year US-style Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) program for aspiring doctors. The school offers the following programmes:

  • Doctor of Medicine
  • Master of Science (Public Health)

School of Occupational Therapy

Professor Nathan Vytialingam, an occupational therapist expert, is the current dean of the Perdana University School of Occupational Therapy (PUScOT). The school offers the following programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy (Conversion to Degree for Diploma Holder)

School of Liberal Arts, Science and Technology

Perdana University School of Liberal Arts, Science and Technology was established with the aim of exploring all humanistic inquiry, from natural sciences to the creative arts. It was previously known as School of Foundation Studies. The school is led by its dean, Assoc. Professor Dr. Chan Soon Choy, who has vast experiences in the field of medicine and human genetics. The school offers the following programmes:

  • Foundation in Science

School of Data Sciences

Perdana University School of Data Sciences (PUScDS) was established with the aim to be on the vanguard for data science. The school is currently led by its acting dean, Assoc. Professor Dr. Yam Wai Keat, who has vast experiences in the field of Bioinformatics. The school offers the following programmes:

  • Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) in Data Science
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics
  • Master of Science (MSc) Bioinformatics
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

School of Business

One of the latest additions to the university, the School of Business (PUScB) was established with the aim to become a Premier Business School in Malaysia. The current dean is Assoc. Professor Bahrulmazi bin Edrak. The school offers the following programme:

  • Master of Business Administration (General Management)
  • Master of Business Administration (Public Health Management)
  • Master of Business Administration (Health Care and Hospital Management)
