Background and release

The song was first released on Eilish's debut EP Don't Smile at Me on August 11, 2017[1] An acoustic version of "Party Favor" was released as a single on the exclusive pink 7-inch vinyl on Record Store Day in April of 2018, along with a cover of Drake's song, "Hotline Bling" as the B-side.[2]

Composition and lyrics

"Party Favor" is played in the key of C major, while Eilish's vocals span a range of A3 to A4.[3] It's the only song on the EP where Eilish plays the ukulele.

In the lyrics, the song starts with a phone ringing and someone saying, "Hey, leave a message." It then slowly formats to a voicemail with Eilish explaining that she is leaving a boy who has become too possessive over her, and tries everything to get him out of her life.[4] She warns that the boys "number might be blocked" and threatens to "call the cops, if you don't stop," Then halfway through the song Eilish reveals that she's dumping her boyfriend on their birthday.[5]

Critical reception

"Party Favor" received favorable reviews from critics. Thomas Smith from NME called said it was "a far cry from her now-relentless and brooding productions, but still irresistibly catchy."[6] In 2020, Insider placed the song at number 29 on their Every Billie Eilish song, ranked list, with Claudia Willen calling it "a creative and brutal portrayal of just how ruthless breakups can be" but that "the song doesn't beg to be listened to on loop as some of Eilish's other breakup songs do, like "Watch" and "Bitches Broken Hearts."[7]

Commercial performance

Even though "Party Favor" did not chart in any country, it was certified gold in Canada with 40,000 sales and gold in the United States with over 500,000 sales.
