Odder Municipality

Odder municipality is a municipality in Region Midtjylland on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in Central Denmark just south of Aarhus and is a part of the greater Aarhus area. The municipality covers an area of 225.04 km², including the islands of Alrø and Tunø. It has a population of 22, 854 (1 October 2019).[1]

Location of Odder municipality

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Odder. Other towns in the municipality include Hou, Gylling, Saksild, Kysing, Hundslund and Ørting.

Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Aarhus to the north, and Skanderborg and Horsens to the west. The municipality is surrounded by water on two sides, to the south and east. Neighboring former municipality Juelsminde to the south is separated from the municipality by the waters of the Kattegat and Horsens Fjord, and neighboring island municipality Samsø to the east is separated from the municipality by the Kattegat.

Policies

The municipality is part of Business Region Aarhus and of the East Jutland metropolitan area, which had a total population of 1.378 million in 2016.[2][3]

Odder municipality was not merged with other municipalities as part of the extensive Municipal Reform of 2007 and is one of the smallest municipalities in Denmark. The mayor as of 21 November 2017 is Uffe Jensen of Venstre, who has been the mayor of Odder since 2014.

Attractions and Experiences

There are many different attractions and experiences to the city of Odder, that you can experience whether you are a visitor or live in Odder municipalities.

Fru Møllers Mølleri

One really big attractions for tourist is the farm shop Fru Møllers Mølleri which is a farm shop with various different shops that focus on making fresh, local, seasonal food putting a big importance on sustainability[5]

Odder Museum

Odder Museum offers a great experience for both local citizens and visitors. At Odder Museum you can get the opportunity to see the old mill of the town and get to experience how farming has developed over the years in Odder. Furthermore, you can experience some of the old antiquity that has been found on archeology sites around Odder municipal. Lastly, you can get to experience and see the culture history of Odder with the new hunting exhibition that is displayed in the museum.[6]

Transportation is very assessable in Odder municipality and you can easily both travel within the town of Odder and to other outside cities with Midttrafik through either railways or the bus services that is offered [7] However, there are many alternatives ways to travel through the city of Odder as well.

Bus Service

Odder offers 14 different busses that travel both regional and local from and to the municipality.

Railway

The 26.5 kilometer Odderbanen train line connected the town and other towns oin the municipality to Aarhus. The railway line was affectionately known as Oddergrisen ("The Odder Pig"). However, Odderbanen shut down in 2017 and replaced by Aarhus Letbane that not only connects Odder to the city Aarhus, but to the city of Grenaa[8] The original A/S Hads-Ning Herreders Jernbane train line was established in 1884.

Alternative transportation

The island of Alrø is connected to the Jensnæs peninsula on the mainland by a dam and during summer time a bicycle ferry connects Alrø to the town of Snaptun in neighboring Hedensted municipality.

Car ferry service connects the mainland via Hou harbour to the island of Tunø, and to Sælvig port on the island of Samsø. Both of these islands are located in the Kattegat.
