Moulana Athar Ali

Moulana Athar Ali (1891-1976) was a Bangladeshi Islamist politician.

Early life

Ali was born in 1891 in Ghangadia Nawangon, Beanibazar Upazila, Sylhet District, Bengal Presidency, British India. He completed his education at Zhingabari Alia Madrasah, Kashemia Rampal Alia Madrasah, and Jamia Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur. He studied at Darul Uloom Deoband university in Uttar Pradesh.[1]

Career

Ali taught at the a number of Madrasahs including Jhingabari Alia Madrasah in Sylhet and Jamia Millia in Comilla. In 1909, he worked as an Imam in a mosque in Kishorganj. He founded Jamia Emdadia Madrasa and Mymensingh Darul Ulum Madrasa. He was elected chairman of Nizam-e-Islam Party. He wrote a number of books.[1] Ali was a Member of the 2nd National Assembly of Pakistan.[2] He had worked for including Islam in the legal system.[3]

Death

Ali died on 6 October in 1976 in the premises of the madrasah he founded in Mymensingh District, Bangladesh.[1]
