List of universities in Namibia

There are three institutions in Namibia considered universities:[1]

1. Namibia University of Science and Technology (formerly the Polytechnic of Namibia) - Windhoek
2. University of Namibia (UNAM) - Windhoek
3. International University of Management (IUM) - Windhoek

The four Colleges of Education are since 2010 part of the University of Namibia; They provide teacher education.[1] The Polytechnic of Namibia was de jure not a university as no provision was made in the Act by which it was created (Act 33 / 1994)[2] to carry this name. A motion for name change into Namibia's University of Science and Technology was rejected by cabinet in August 2010,[3] but approved by the same body in December 2012. The transition to university happened in subsequent years.[4]

Health Training Institutions In Namibia

Welwitchia Health Training Center-

  • WELWITCHIA Health Training Centre (WHTC) is a registered private higher education institution in Namibia with a special focus on Health, Social and Management Sciences. The institution opened its doors to its first students in September 2013 and continues to complement government’s efforts to address skills shortages both in Namibia and beyond.[5]
  • WHTC started with one campus in Windhoek, which is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) and the Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCNA) to offer fully accredited qualifications in Namibia. Further, WHTC has standing agreements with the Ministry of Health and Social Services, among other registered training hospitals, to offer practicum to its students at all accredited teaching hospitals and clinics in Namibia. WHTC has five campuses across Namibia with the headquarters in Windhoek and campuses located in Kombat Town, Walvis Bay and Nkurenkuru, respectively.[5]

I-Care Health Training Institute Namibia

  • I-CARE HEALTH TRAINING INSTITUTE, a Namibian private health training institution was established in the year 2017, with the guidance of the Namibian Nursing Act no. 8 of 2004, to join hands with other stakeholders in addressing the aforementioned national requisite.[6]
  • Programmes offered are based on the demands and priorities of the health system and demographics of the cosmopolitan society in Namibia. The institute offers both basic and post basic nursing/ healthcare programmes.[6]

Vocational training institutions

Most of the vocational training in Namibia is delivered by Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) controlled by the Namibian Training Authority (NTA). There are seven VTCs in Namibia:[7]

  1. Eenhana Vocational Training Centre, Engela, Ohangwena Region
  2. Nakayale Vocational Training Centre, Outapi, Omusati Region
  3. Okakarara Vocational Training Centre, Okakarara, Otjozondjupa Region. The OVTC has 50 staff and about 600 students.[8]
  4. Rundu Vocational Training Centre, Rundu, Kavango Region
  5. Valombola Vocational Training Centre, Ongwediva, Oshana Region
  6. Windhoek Vocational Training Centre, Windhoek, Khomas Region
  7. Zambezi Vocational Training Centre, Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region
  8. Ngato Vocational Training Center, Rundu, Kavango West

There are few other vocational training institutions in Namibia. Some of the artisan training is done by the Polytechnic of Namibia.[1]
