He rose to prominence with the release of his third studio album Barrio Fino in 2004, which garnered him a Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. The lead single, "Gasolina", became the first reggaeton song to receive a nomination for a Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year.[2][3] Following the success of Barrio Fino, Daddy Yankee released the studio albums El Cartel: The Big Boss (2007), Mundial (2010), and Prestige (2012), the live album Barrio Fino en Directo (2005), the soundtrack Talento de Barrio (2008), and the mixtape King Daddy (2013). All of them were nominated for Latin Grammy Awards for Best Urban Music Album, but none of them won. El Cartel: The Big Boss was the only one to receive a Grammy Award nomination. Seven singles from those albums were nominated for Latin Grammy Awards for Best Urban Song, without wins.

His guest feature on Luis Fonsi's "Despacito" (2017) garnered him four Latin Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as three Grammy Award nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The single has also received six Billboard Latin Music Awards (including Hot Latin Song of the Year), five Billboard Music Awards (including Top Hot 100 Song), and two American Music Awards. The song was inducted to the 2019 edition of the Guinness World Records for achieving seven milestones, while Daddy Yankee was recognized for breaking other three records on Billboard charts.

Between 2015 and 2019, five non-album singles were nominated for Latin Grammy Awards, with "Dura" (2018) garnering his first recipient for Best Urban Song.

Daddy Yankee was recognized as Latin Songwriter of the Year by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 2006, 2017 and 2019, and received a Voice of Music Award in 2014. In 2006, he was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.[4] In 2008, he was recognized as Latino of the Year by Harvard University's Latin American cultural show Presencia Latina for his social work through his foundation Corazón Guerrero. In 2017, he became the first urban artist to receive his own star at the Puerto Rican Walk of Fame sidewalk. His career was also recognized in 2016 at the 23rd Billboard Latin Music Awards by receiving the Industry Leader award. In 2019, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 31st Lo Nuestro Awards.
