List of animated series with LGBTQ characters: 2005–2009

The depiction of LGBTQ characters in animated series 2005-2009 changed significantly from those aired from 2000 to 2004. In 2005, American Dad introduced a pansexual character as a protagonist: a space alien with an ambiguous sexuality named Roger.[1][2] The following year, an animated stand-up comedy web series, Lizzy the Lezzy, about a woman called Lizzy who talks mostly about lesbian interests, premiered.[3] The next year, Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World began airing on Logo TV and Teletoon, which featured many gay and lesbian characters. During this time period, LGBTQ characters also appeared in prominent shows like Family Guy, The Venture Bros., The Goode Family, The Cleveland Show, and South Park, along with in anime such as Paradise Kiss, Sweet Blue Flowers, Whispered Words, and Macross Frontier.

This list only includes recurring characters, otherwise known as supporting characters, which appear frequently from time to time during the series' run, often playing major roles in more than one episode, and those in the main cast are listed below. LGBTQ characters which are guest stars or one-off characters are listed on the pages focusing exclusively on lesbian characters (in animation and anime), bisexual characters (in animation and anime), trans characters, pansexual characters, asexual characters, non-binary characters, and intersex characters.

For a further understanding of how these LGBTQ characters fit into the overall history of animation, please read the History of LGBTQ characters in animated series: 2000s page.

The names are organized alphabetically by surname (i.e. last name), or by single name if the character does not have a surname. If more than two characters are in one entry, the last name of the first character is used.

"Zezé Maria" is a normal masculine name, as it is not unknown for men in Portuguese-speaking countries to be called José Maria or Zé Maria. However, José is a masculine name and Maria is a feminine name, hinting at the character's gender ambiguity. Additionally, in Portuguese, Zezé Maria is referred to by pronouns ele ("he") and ela ("she"), as well as articles o (masculine "the") and a (feminine "the").
