List of New Jersey tornadoes

This is a list of all tornadoes reported in the U.S. state of New Jersey.

April 21, 2020 EF0 Normandy Beach, NJ A waterspout formed over Barnegat Bay between Silver Bay and Kettle Creek, then moved ashore at the Normandy Beach Yacht Club. Several boats and associated trailers were tossed and flipped, with minor damage being reported to at least one home on South Court. This weak tornado may have lifted as it proceeded east across Route 35, and approached the coast just north of Normandy Shores Beach Club. The tornado then became a waterspout as it emerged over the coastal waters, causing little or no additional damage.[1]
November 1, 2019 EF1 Harding Township-Florham Park Borough, NJ A tornado touched down in Harding Township, traveling through Chatham, Madison, before ending in Florham Park. This storm uprooted several trees and power lines, some of which fell onto residential homes.[2][3]
August 7, 2019 EF0 Millville, NJ A weak tornado briefly touched down in a field of solar panels near the Millville City Sewer Department Facility, destroying several rows of panels. The tornado then moved into a wooded area, snapping one tree and damaging several others, dissipating shortly after.[4]
August 7, 2019 EF0 Hightstown, NJ A weak tornado briefly touched down on the property of a greenhouse in Hightstown, shattering the glass roof, blowing shards of glass hundreds of yards away, piercing the doors and walls of a nearby barn. Several metal support beams from the greenhouse were tossed up to 200 yards as well. The tornado then passed over an barn, scattering glass, flower planters and support beams into an nearby field. Several trees were downed. The tornado dissipated as it moved into a clearing outside of the wooded area.[4]
August 7, 2019 EF0 Springfield, NJ A tornado briefly touched down near Springfield Avenue and Route 22, downing power lines, busting solar panels and damaging dozens of vehicles at an dealership. An rooftop air conditioning unit collapsed onto an sedan, and a section of the dealership's warehouse roof was torn wide open.[5]
July 11, 2019 EF1 Mount Laurel, NJ A tornado touched down in an open area on an golf course in Mount Laurel, travelling discontinuously for more than an mile, snapping and uprooting numerous trees, and damaging several apartment buildings before dissipating.[6]
July 6, 2019 EF0 Mount Laurel, NJ A tornado briefly touched down in a warehouse parking lot, overturning a car before passing over the warehouse, causing minor roof damage before dissipating.[7]
June 13, 2019 EF0 Mullica Hill, NJ A tornado touched down near Saddle Court in Mullica Hill, ripping a gutter off an residence and lifting backyard furniture approximately 50 yards. The tornado then moved northeast, damaging several trees before dissipating southwest of Highway 22.[8][9]
June 13, 2019 EF1 Deptford-Blackwood, NJ A tornado touched down near Deptford, snapping and uprooting several trees and damaging three residences. The tornado then moved into Blackwood, where an apartment building was damaged by an uprooted tree.[9]
May 28, 2019 EF1 Stanhope-Hopatcong, NJ A tornado touched down in Stanhope, damaging an high school before moving into Hopatcong, downing trees and power lines before disspiating.[10]
June 24, 2017 EF0 Howell, NJ A tornado touched down near Oak Glen Park in Howell, uprooting numerous hardwood trees before dissipating.[11]
June 24, 2017 EF0 Howell, NJ A tornado touched down in the parking lot of Home Depot in Howell, just a few minutes after the Oak Glen Park tornado dissipated. Several trees were uprooted and snapped, and metal roofing from the Chase Bank was torn off. Trees were uprooted on Route 9 and West Farms Road, and at Ideal Plaza. The tornado caused roofing and siding damage to the building occupied by Ice Cream on Route 9. A fence and additional trees were downed on the property as well. The tornado dissipated shortly after.[11]
July 25, 2016 EF1 Readington-Branchburg, NJ A tornado touched down in Readington Township in Hunterdon County and then moved east towards Somerset County. The tornado (thought at first to be a microburst) broke several utility poles, threw vehicles up to 100 feet in the air, and downed trees and power lines.[12][13]
July 14, 2016 EF0 Rocksburg-Harmony, NJ A tornado touched down near White Township and moved along a path nearly 3 miles long, damaging a barn and a home, and shearing the tops of trees.[14]
October 7, 2013 EF1 Paramus, NJ A tornado touched down near the town of Paramus, moving northeast across Bergen County. The tornado damaged an cemetery and an golf course, and snapped and uprooted trees.[15]
August 13, 2013 EF0 Manahawkin, NJ A tornado touched down in Manahawkin, snapping trees, downing power lines and damaging several church buildings.[16]
July 1, 2013 EF0 Berkeley Heights-New Providence-Summit, NJ A tornado touched down in Berkeley Heights near the Passaic River just west of Garfield Street, passed northeast through New Providence and disspiated in Summit near Evergreen Road. The tornado caused extensive tree damage.[17][18]
September 4, 2012 EF0 Mount Ephraim, NJ A weak tornado touched down in Mount Ephraim, only being on the ground for less than an minute. The tornado uprooted trees, downed power lines and damaged the roofs of several homes.[19]
August 28, 2011 EF0 Robbinsville, NJ A weak tornado touched down near Robbinsville in Mercer County. Numerous trees were felled, and several electric poles were damaged.[20]
August 9, 2011 EF0 Millstone, NJ A brief tornado touched down in Millstone Township, and dissipated shortly after. No damage was reported.[21]
September 16, 2010 EF1 Plumsted, NJ A tornado touched down in Plumsted Township, causing roof damage to two homes and downing numerous trees.[22][23]
July 29, 2009 EF2 Sussex, NJ A tornado touched down near Wantage in Sussex County, downing numerous trees, partially collapsing two barns and damaging several others.[24][25]
July 27, 2004 F1 Pemberton-Woodland, NJ A high end F1 tornado touched down in Pemberton Township in Burlington County, and then moved into Woodland Township. A roof was peeled off and the top floor of a building was damaged at the New Lisbon Developmental Center. Two workers in separate vans received minor injuries when one van was overturned and the other hit by a tree branch.[26]
May 27, 2001 F2 Manalapan, NJ A tornado touched down in the northeast corner of the Marlboro Airport and traveled northeast through Debracy Court and Hawkins Corner Road. Trees were downed, windows blown out and multiple homes received roof damage.[27]

In addition, tornadoes have been reported in New Jersey in 2006, 2004, 2003, 2001, 1999, 1995, 1994, 1983, and 1982. However, damage reports are not available.

  • May 27, 2001: Assessments of damage to buildings in Manalapan Township placed wind speed at 120 miles per hour, and determined that the twister was 200 feet wide and traveled a path of about a mile and a half.[29]

  • June 24, 1992: Washington Township tornado[30]
  • October 18, 1990: Montgomery Township tornado. Three homes were destroyed and 8 people were injured in Montgomery Township, New Jersey. Was rated an F3.
  • July 10, 1989: Northeastern United States tornado outbreak. Two F0s and an F1 tracked through parts of Passaic County, New Jersey and Bergen County, New Jersey, snapping and uprooting trees, and causing $4 million in damage. About 150 houses were damaged in Bergen county alone.[31]
  • July 21, 1983: Ocean County, an F3 tornado that caused no fatalities or injuries.[28]
  • June 29, 1982: Ocean County[28]
  • May 28, 1973: Flanders County, a dozen homes were destroyed and 12 people were injured in Flanders, New Jersey.[32] It was rated an F3.[33]
  • August 1, 1899: Elizabeth County tornado [34]
  • July 1, 1892: Gloucester County tornado[35][36]
  • June 29, 1835: New Brunswick County tornado[37]
